PETRONAS Canada partners with the Wilder Institute/ Calgary Zoo to support conservation efforts

A building within Exploration Asia has been renamed “PETRONAS Gateway to Asia”

PETRONAS Canada strives to have a positive impact in the communities where we live and work. It’s why we are excited to announce our new partnership with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo.

For more than 30 years, the internationally accredited Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo has been a leading authority in wildlife conservation. Through the partnership, PETRONAS Canada is contributing $1 million to support the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s conservation efforts in the zoo’s Exploration Asia destination. In recognition of the partnership, a building within Exploration Asia has been renamed “PETRONAS Gateway to Asia”. This building houses unique species, such as the white-handed gibbons, Komodo dragons and the Malayan tapirs, all of which are listed as endangered on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List of Threatened Species.

"PETRONAS Canada is proud to partner with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo in support of their world-class conservation efforts," says Shannon Young, Vice President, Legal, Sustainability and External Affairs, PETRONAS Canada. "Through the work within PETRONAS Gateway to Asia, we are able to support conservation activity surrounding the endangered animals residing there, as well as educate visitors on the importance of species and ecosystem conservation.”

One of the ways PETRONAS Canada’s contribution will be supporting conservation work is through the zoo’s participation in the Association of Zoos & Aquariums’ Species Survival Plan (SSP) for Malayan tapirs which calls for a breeding recommendation for the zoo’s resident tapirs, named ‘Tanuck’ and ‘Sempurna’. As a company with roots in Malaysia, PETRONAS Canada’s support for the SSP breeding program brings a special connection to the Calgary community and visitors alike.

“We look forward to following the progress of the Malayan tapir SSP breeding program, while learning more about a species that connects us to the other side of the world,” says Shannon.

PETRONAS Canada’s support for the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is through the company’s Planting Tomorrow social impact pillar.
